Goin' Around in Circles

Well, I did it.

I joined a gym today. Now, don't go gettin' all excited -- it's sort of "gym for dummies," but it's a major big step for me.

I finally screwed up my courage and walked into a Curves this afternoon, where I was met by an adorable perky Curves person, who must have thought I was the easiest sales job she'd ever had.

For the first several minutes I was there, we were the only folks in the place (Tuesday and Thursday are their slow days), but before I left two women had come in for their workout. One was a woman I judged to be in her mid-to-late 50's who looked fine but probably wants to lose 20 pounds, and the other was much younger and much larger. I was able to watch them work through part of their cycles and thought, "Pffpth. I can do this." Aside from the Curves Girl, I was the trimmest one in the joint.

Then Curves Girl took me to one of the machines, because I had expressed concern about my lack o' height and some of the leg things, so she showed me how she works this (they have a very firm thing you insert to scoot you up) since she's actually shorter than am I.

Well, I gotta tell ya -- I thought I was gonna DIE on the machine. She kept saying, "when you hear the hydraulic sound you know you're working it correctly." Hear??? I have to HEAR??? And exercise at the same time???

Lordamercy.

I go back Monday afternoon at 4:00 for a complete instructional session, and to have everything measured and weighed. Egads. I am not looking forward to this. It's time to be humbled.

So, why am I doing this now? I'm at a decent weight, but with the Change o' Life thing beginning to happen I've noticed a rather distressing Change o' Body shape going on, and although I don't aspire to be all ripped or anything, it would be nice to get a check on the sags before I start trippin' over myself.

I wish that I could commit to working out. It's great that you've made the leap! I'm trying a new get up at 5am and workout before work thing. This morning I didn't get up until 6:15 but I worked out just the same and it felt great! Now, if I can only convince the snoozing man next to me to join... I may be able to stick to it. Its just so hard when sleepy-brain says 'no... you can stay in bed for maybe just one more hour...'

I've also been doing (mostly) Walk Away the Pound videos.. but I'd rather be walking in the neighborhood. When the temps cool a bit I think I'll drive to Granny's house and walk in her neighborhood since they have that security company....

I am really gonna need encouragement with this, and I signed a contract for a YEAR so that the Scots-Irish in me would be more inclined to follow through.

If you were here I'd drag you with me. ;-)

For YEARS I've sworn. I'm just not a gym person. I'd never sweat in public was my motto. Then they had to go and build a new athletic club a mile from my house. On top of that, they started advertising it's a 'family club' and marketing it to the 55 and over neighborhood on the other side. First they took away the - too difficult to go home and then to the gym excuse, then they took away the 'it's just a meet market for twenty-somethings excuse. I can take a hint, so we joined. I still don't do any of the classes because the schedules don't work with mine, but I have really enjoyed having something besides my treadmill for exercise.

Be careful and don't hurt yourself, and have fun.
